Updated H2.0 theme archive

By popular demand, here it is, complete with IE7 tweaks:
H2.0 as of Dec.3, 2006.

Hemingway itself has not seen an update in a while, so I am thinking about making a new theme. It would be radically different from we have now, and will make heavy use of the Yahoo! UI libraries. On the other hand, I’m lazy, and as soon as I get my hands on a Wii + Zelda I will have even less time for these matters.

If work on H2.0 were to continue, what features would you want? Comment away!

BtYung: not sure what you mean… I’ve seen a bug with the footer when the google analytics code is blocked, is that it?
In any case, you really should be using Firefox

H2.0 is really great under Firefox 2.0.
and i upload a screenshot about h2.0 under IE7 on Flickr. Maybe helpful for me to express the bug.

Hi ad,

I also use your theme for my blog and I love it. I can’t express how much fun I had modifying it. It’s so versatile, I made it look the way I wanted but kept all the great features you added to it. Can’t wait to see a new version of H2.0

What I’d love is for you to include a preview pane for comments. I’m using a preview already but I can’t manage to have it display correctly, it’s conflicting with the toggle comments script. The script loads all the comments fine but doens’t allow for a full preview when people are typing. The only way to get the full preview is to close the comments and reopen them.

Anyways, this is what I’d like to see on the new theme. And keep away from the wii, please, please, so you’ll save time to be creative and come up with something awesome.

Thanks for creating H2.0, it’s the best WordPress theme I’ve come across.

Kildjean: yeah I’ve seen that happen before. It seems to be the WP theme config that somehow gets confused. I’ve seen it happen with other themes as well, so it’s definitely a WP issue. I have found that uninstalling the theme (switch to other theme, delete h2o folder, again switch to other theme) and then re-installing h2o in a folder WITH A DIFFERENT NAME than originally will usually fix the problem. - but FYI a theme can work fine on the front-end even if the admin is a little confused

I tried doing what you suggested. I removed it, retried with naming it in different ways and it still doesnt work fine. I am going to keep it because i really liked it, but its curious to me that its the only theme that has ever done that to me.

I have a couple of other questions I would like to ask since I am a little bit new to wordpress, although I know my way around php quite well.

1. I have seen sites that use hemingway or your theme [h2.0], and in the about section they have 3 colums (like masey.au). How can i make that work for me?

2. I would like to remove the square in the about that has your pic… I want to put my xbox360 gamertag there instead. how could I do that? I checked the plugin that adds it but i didnt find anything that denoted where to change the image or to remove it.

3. Why do the normal wordpress widgets dont work with your theme? Is there a way for me to use some of my old widgets in your theme?

I just ran it to a few kinks, so I’m listing them if anyone else has the same problems.

1. PRESENTATION THEME IMAGE NOT SHOWING
In the “Admin” under “Presentation” I was getting:

Instead of the actual theme image.
1A. I just open up the themes/h2o/style.css and cut out the first 8 lines and then saved, then paste the same line again and saved and it worked. The image shows up in the “Presentation”. Not sure why this happens, maybe blank spaces or something

2. SAME BLOCK NAME
under Presentation and then Hemingway Options, there are two “Recent Entries” blocks name the same. Well one is really “Related Post” .
2a. So open up the themes/h2o/functions.php and on line 143 rename “recent entries” to “related post”

3. IE BLANK AREA (posted earlier by BtYong)
In ie there was a big black area at the bottom of the page, so all you did is scroll. Well the problem is the ie_only.css in the “theme/h2o/ie_only.css”
3a. So open up “theme/h2o/ie_only.css” and go to line 20 and change “6666px” to “100%”

Fermin: thanks for your comments! Regarding the “IE blank area”, I think I had done that 6666px thing because of LightBox’s behaviour with ie7… i prefer useless scroll bars to an uglyfied overlay.

I would like to incorporate the Flickrss addon as you have it. Would it be to much to ask how you make your pictures preview that way?

Also, I am confused on how to get my pictures to display in line without the link arrow.

Hi, I am a WP newbie and am trying to set up the H2.0 on my webspace, but I see random text instead of the theme image. Its exactly similar to what Kildjean and Fermin mention above but none of their solutions has helped set it right. Also when I try to edit style.css and click on update file, I get a window saying that the theme file does not exist! Is there something that I am doing wrong here.

Rob: I modified the flickrrss plugin for it to use LightBox JS. See http://gaarf.info/2006/05/07/lightbox-integrated/ - the php code is included in the H2.0 theme archive. The CSS code to remove the arrows is as follows:

Guru: Yeah that bug again… not really sure what causes it, I thought renaming the folder fixed it but obviously not in all cases… Keep us posted if you find a solution!

Display problems when you have “Users must be registered and logged in to comment check in ” checked in the admin. The gray area where the blocks are shrinks in from both sides. Found the problem with a closing div tag in the comments area.

Fix: open wp-content/themes/h2o/comments.php and on line 92 move it after closing “” so its between the two closing “endif” around line 95

I can’t find the ie_only.css page mentioned above, possibly because I haven’t upgraded h2o. But I am having a big problem with IE7. My fixed footer disappears as soon as someone scrolls down.

Now ad, I agree with you about Firefox, but it appears that the majority of my readers are still using IE. I notice that your footer remains in place. Do you have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Astorg: I don’t know much about UTW, but for the search box it is easy - just remove #search {display:none;} from user_styles_gaarf.css

Regarding the issues with the theme display in the theme selection page - the text file saved on the Mac needs to be saved in Unix format. On a *nix host it appears littered with ^Ms and thus Wordpress does not parse the file correctly. Just load into a text editor and be sure to save in Unix format. You can use dos2unix or vi to verify/correct this on a *nix host. HTH. Nice job

in reply to the weird text showing up under Presentation, go into your theme editor and copy all the text within style.css. the code here is neatly displayed while the file itself isn’t.

now open up the file itself and you may see that all the code is has no breaks anywhere (its all like one continuous line). paste the code, save and re-upload. problem fixed.

Thanks for provide this awesome H2O theme for WP and I love it a lot. I have downloaded it and made changes (heavily), both codes & images as you can see at: http://www.vikiworks.com

If any update is coming in future, I suggest:
-Tagcloud intergrated
-Improve lightbox experience (better if customizable in admin)
-Customizable footer to “float” and “traditional”(fixed)
-Replace header title (blog title) to image (logo)

Hope those will add to coming updates, thanks, man!

After I update wordpress to 2.1 ella, blogroll doesn’t work, says:
WordPress database error: [Unknown column ‘cat_1′ in ‘order clause’]
SELECT * FROM wp_categories WHERE cat_ID > 0 AND link_count > 0 ORDER BY cat_1 ASC

I have to roll back to 2.06, anyone know this issue?

I’m running an original Hemingway theme on my site; now I’ve realized the IE7 problems with the ancillary items (the third block switches under the first one)!

Could you possible explain the steps needed to fix this issue? I can’t really figure it out from your theme’s CSS…

Hi Melanie, glad you like h2o. Unfortunately I doubt I will have time to make any major update soon… How complicated is it to enamble widgets? I could not easily find a howto or faq about “widgetizing” an existing theme. Got one? I’d be happy to check it out.

Just wanted to officially say “great job”. Been using H2O for a few months now and really have no inclination to move away from it. If I can, I hope to get working CSS in place to provide:
1. Working Image replacement using the Phark Method. This should allow both the h2 and p mark-up within #header to be replaced with separate images.

2. White version. Really like the look of Japanese Cherry Blossom so am looking to use a similar theme on my white version. If I get anything decent, I’ll share on here so you can include in your next release if you like.

Few questions:
1. Widget don’t work with this theme, do they? If not, will that be something you’ll consider for future implementation?
2. As I’ve only used widget-based themes before, I have no idea if certain plugins work ie Fuzzy Recent Comments and Fuzzy Recent Posts. I would like these to take the place of “Recently”. If these plugins can work with this, how do I modify?
3. Has anybody else used another image gallery besides Flickr? If so, what? I’d be interested in seeing what works best with this theme.

I only ask because the theme does look amazing and I’d like it to work for me! I don’t want to give up on it without trying.

Hi Gaarf,

Excellent work on the theme. I have modified your theme slightly. I was receiving some JS warnings when opening the post for read in IE6. I have narrowed the problem down to the comments section.

I’ve noticed that if you disable comments for a post, IE6 presents some warnings. Does this happen with you?

Lastly, do you use ImageManager plugin? If so, do you receive any further JS warnings when editing a post in Admin mode? I use ImageManager version 2.4.1.

Iyyaz: yes, if you disable comments, you are likely to get JS errors. Another thing on the todo list, damn!

Thanks for the reply. I don’t mind having a look at it. Unfortunately, I think the all.components.js file isnt formatted correctly for viewing on Windows. You work on MacOSX I think, but there are no \r characters

As for ImageManager, I think I resolved the problem by not having any additional lightbox plugins installed. Your theme has this included so I’ve disabled all others.

I’ve just noticed the new WP upgrade. It seems I spend more time on logistics than on blogging itself.

Really stupid question, but I used to be able to upload images from within the admin screen whilst composing a post and they used to get added and I could play with the code to enter them onto my site.

I wonder if this is less to do with H2O and more to do with 2.1 Ella? I too have seen the problem mentioned by Yichi above which means that the blogroll block no longer works in H20:

I have lots of texts coming out on the ‘presentation>theme’ page within the admin section of WP. Instead of just a png image, I get tons of texts !! I had texts in the theme editor page too but did like ‘ Ken’ had advised and it worked. But I still have tons of texts on the Theme preview page.
The texts start like:

I had exactly the same blogroll error message as Yichi & GingerNinja. This seems to fix it although I’m not sure if it’s the best way:
In the theme, edit blocks/blogroll.php. This fix is from http://wordpress.org/support/topic/101753 (3rd entry down by “Trent”).
b.t.w. I’m using WordPress 2.1.2 and h2o-20061203.zip

p.s. I also had the gobbledygook in WordPress Presentation for h2o. I opened style.css in vi on unix and did :%s/^M/^M/g and that seemed to fix it. (^M is a typed ctrl-M, not just caret M); similar to what Ken suggested above.

boris: uhhh… officially this theme is unsupported. you can however call our hotline by whistling the theme music from Indiana Jones from any hilltop and then jumping around three times. One of our friendly customer-service pigeons will gladly fly by and attempt to resolve your concerns.

Serioulsy, H2.0 installs like any other WP theme. If you’re really having trouble, please explain what the trouble is.

Problem is that ther is 2 files when i unzip it. Dont know where to place this files. I have tryd to place it in difrent folders, but i cant make it heapen. Can you just tell me in what folder to put them? Thanks

The archive contains a folder called “wp-content”. Just upload the contents of this to YOUR wp-content on YOUR webserver.

Hi there - I’m working on using this theme for my blog (here)with some customisation. I’d love have a top nav as well, a hidden div underneath the header, a bit like here whilst still using the moofx for the comments section. Is there an easy way to go about this - I’m not getting it at the moment.

Hi Jon. I’m sure your changes are completely possible. You’ll probably want to put your extra DIV where the [END] #header comment is in the main template. Let us know how it goes!

Scott: I tried 2.2.1 locally, no obvious issues with the theme. Can you tell us more about your issues with the new WP branch and Hewingweb theme?

I have been reluctant to upgrade because of the numerous security vulnerabilities that have popped up in the 2.2 code.

I got it working but the description is broken within the admin page (showing code). Also when editing the theme the right side description is broken (showing code).

Not about to get the lightbox to work either. Is is possible not to use your about me section?

Scott: look in the comments above, there is a fix for the admin page showing code issue.

As for getting rid of “about me”, just go to admin/presentation/hemingway options and take out “About Page” from the bottombar section.

2.2 Widgets do not work on this theme yet.

I’d love to use your theme on mysite, but I was wondering about the white space at the bottom, the original Hemmingway theme doesn’t have this, do you know how to remove it? It seems to only happen on your homepage.

Dawn: the whitespace is there on IE only. It is needed for the flickr/lightbox plugin. If you don’t care for it, you’ll need to edit themes/h2o/ie_only.css

I love the H2.0 theme so much, I’ve been modding it myself.

Is it possible to have the lightbox ‘next’ and ‘previous’ arrows show up? I noticed there doesn’t seem to be a way for me to add them and make my images into groups, like the original lightbox.
