Apricot Computers
Surfing the web, minding my own business, trying not to worry about the imminent annual bloodbath, I stumbled upon news regarding Apricot’s netbook line – wait what? Apricot? Apparently they are still around, so this gives me an opportunity for a trip down memory lane.
And by memory, I mean all 256k of it.
My mom’s first computer was an Apricot. I think it ran a version of CP/M – which means that it smelled like DOS, but wasnt compatible with anything. The main use for the thing was Wordstar, in full
I have fond memories of sneaking up to the office at night to play a game of Nibbles on the then high-res monochrome display. I remember finding the mini-screen on the keyboard pretty nifty, but not amazing enough to forgive the thing for not running games like Barbarian.
This small LCD screen could also display the current line of text you’re working on and there’s even a contrast knob on the right of the keyboard.
Good times! What was your antique gear?
