Don't Starve Review - Alone in The Dark

Don't Starve is a survival, roguelike game in which you're expected to stay alive in a strange, scary dimension at all costs. Fend off demons, run away from demons, craft weaponry, and items to kill demons. And also never be hungry. Download Don't Starve if the whimsical horror/survival games increase your heart rate.

Graphics: 5

Don't Starve has one of the weirdest art styles in the industry. Imagine a diorama or a kiddies book with pop-up illustrations that somehow became alive and began acting freakishly. This is what Don't Starve looks and feels like. The outlandish world you explore, resembles paper cut-outs made for some art project and there's a certain eccentric, pseudo-gothic feel about that. Like one borrowed from a T. Burton movie.

Despite such unconventional looks, Don't Starve can boast of smooth animation and physics, thus providing both aesthetical pleasure and satisfying gaming experience.

Gameplay: 3.5

You play as a mysterious person, who got teleported to the dimension infested with demons. There's nothing you can use, until you gather resources and craft survival equipment, just like in Terraria. And whenever the night comes down, you'd better have a campfire lit.

Resources can be found in quite unexpected places. For instance, you can weave a silky vest, after you brutalize a brood of spiders and get their remains in your possession. Additionally, surroundings in the game are interactable. Our Don't Starve review warns you: if you're reckless enough to bring a torch in the woods and put one of the trees in flames by accident, the whole wood will be wrapped in the glaring fabric of HP-burning fire. And then you'll be a crisp.

If you die - you die for good. You start over from scratch, and your inventory/skillset will be nullified as well. As for the back-story - you barely know anything: the protagonist's bio, what brought him here, who stays behind it all etc.

But your #1 priority is to get the nutrition. The hunger meter - shaped like stomach - shows when the food intake is radical. If you skip a meal - game over. Another thing to care about is Sanity - its meter can go low pretty fast too.

Controls: 4

Don't Starve isn't very hard to control. Only D-Pad isn't responsible for walking - it's assigned to the left stick. Square is for Attack, X for Action/Accept, etc.

Replay Value: 4.5

If you want to succeed at Don't Starve, you'll have to replay it a lot. It's an error-n-trial game, which punishes you for every mistake. But going in one more time is highly tempting.

The Bottom Line

Don't Starve is a bizarre, eccentric and hard-won game. Its visuals are a scary, feverish dream. Its battles and survival are as easy to win as a Japanese Emperor's crown. And it makes you shiver at every little rustling sound behind your back. But it's worth being played, even if you die 12 times in a row.
