West of Loathing Review: Hand-Drawn Humoristic Western with Demons

West of Loathing is a humoristic 2D adventure role-playing game with the turn-based fighting system by Asymmetric Publications. In this game, you play as a stickman in the Weird West setting. You have to fight crazy cowboys and supernatural creatures like demon cows. You can download West of Loathing for Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Nintendo Switch and iOS.

West of Loathing game is a real piece of doodle art. Every location, character, and object is drawn by hand using simple lines and only the black color. It looks incredibly authentic and fun. It’s fascinating to look for new items as they all change your character’s look, while every new location astonishes you with what simple line-art can picture.

Gameplay: 5

West of Loathing gameplay combines RPG with the turn-based combat system. The game starts from the character’s dream, where you have to choose your class from Cow Puncher, Beanslinger (Mage), and Snake Oiler. Yes, cows are actually demonic foes in the game and snakes are the source of powerful oil for production of expensive potions.

West of Loathing stats are rather symbolic. They include Muscle, Mysticality, Moxie, Grit, Gumption, Glamour, Deadeye, and Hornswoggling. You can also upgrade specific skills that belong to your character class. For example, the Snake Oiler can deploy snakes and whip them. The perks section provides several more funny options, such as stupid walking, or tumbleweed walk.

When you enter the world, you meet stupid fellows behind every corner. Some of them are not even humans. It may be a demonic cow, a Cactus Bill who drank too much cactus beer and became a plant, and many more. The quests are weird and hilarious as well. You may find power-ups in spittoons, guano, and barter valuables for trinkets.

Controls: 5

Though West of Loathing 2D quest game presents a side-scrolling progression, you can use WASD to walk up and down locations to reach objects, NPCs, and story characters. The mouse is used to interact with objects and fight. Switch, and iOS versions are optimized for gamepad input. There’s not much difference between input methods, because the gameplay is unhurried.

The full walkthrough for this West of Loathing review took slightly more than 8 hours, which is quite a lot for a comic franchise. However, it can hold you up to the end and make you take one more try for another class.

West of Loathing is a one of a kind comic game that is designed and written with best Spaghetti Western and Weird West guidelines. Music, screenplay, dialogues, and mission scenarios are all very authentic and witty. You definitely have to play this game if you like westerns, good humor, and turn-based combat.
