INSIDE is a 2.5D indie action platformer game with puzzles by the developers of Limbo, Playdead. In this game, you play a nameless boy who struggles to escape a strange utopia city in the woods where all citizens are zombie-like creatures with mind-controlled from the outside. You can download INSIDE for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and iOS.
The INSIDE game follows the best features of Limbo, but instead of 2D, it’s made in 2.5D. It means that you can see objects and characters from a volumetric perspective. The world is mostly monochrome with dim variations of grey, blue, and green gradients. The world is divided into layers. The boy is always at the forefront, while enemies can chase him from the background and change lanes to reach him. Unlike Limbo, INSIDE presents quality camera work and a variety of angles at different locations.
INSIDE gameplay consists of traditional platform mechanics, such as jumping, climbing, running, and swimming. All actions look and feel very natural. Developers also decided to add non-linear progression elements. You can discover secret rooms during the playthrough to collect shining orbs. You can either deactivate them all, or neglect. By choosing one of the options, you can reveal two alternative endings.
There are many ways to die, so you have to be careful. However, it’s exciting to watch death scenarios because they’re brightly visualized. The boy can be shot with a tranquilizer, torn apart with shockwaves, killed by security dogs or machines, or drown in the pond. You can continue playing only from automatic checkpoints.
The testing of control layouts on iOS, consoles, and PC for this INSIDE review showed that there’s not much difference on which platform to play. The least convenient are touchscreen controls, because you may fail to do something because you can’t feel buttons.
Replay Value: 4.5
INSIDE full game walkthrough is rather short. It takes around 2 hours, but you can complete the game twice to unlock the alternative ending by disabling all orbs. There’s not much difference in the plot flow, though. It’s also fascinating to come up with theories about the meaning of endings because the game leaves many questions about the boy and the setting unanswered.
The Bottom Line
This game is highly recommended to all fans of Limbo and to those players who seek unusual platform adventures. INSIDE offers immersive plot, a variety of gameplay mechanics to master, and the strong aftertaste with many questions and feelings. Playdead learned from their mistakes in Limbo and made this game much better.
